Creating template from existing document

Hello!

I am about to begin formatting a dissertation and want to use a template. I have already previously formatted an entire dissertation from this same university and would like to create a template from the dissertation I previously completed to preserve the styles.

I thought I could make a copy of the previous dissertation, delete all the text (it is ODT), and then save as a LO template (OTT). I have made a copy of the previous dissertation but consistently get a message that the content is writer protected when I try to delete all the text (select all, delete). I have checked in the Options–Compatibility and it does not appear write protected. The document has no sections. I seem to be able to delete individual pages.

Is there perhaps an easier way to create a template from this dissertation? It’s long (200 pp.) so I would prefer not to have to manually delete the text page by page.

Thanks much.
Lisa

What operating system and version?

Can you create a new document, close it, re-open it and then edit it? If not then it could be anti-virus blocking editing.

Look for an anti-ransomware or protected folder setting in your AV and Allow soffice.bin
