Chapter numbering and caption numbering in a master document/subdocument

Hello!

I’m having trouble figuring out chapter numbering and figure caption numbers in a master document. I have applied Chapter numbering (Tools, Chapter Numbering, using the Heading 1 style for numbering) to both the subdocument and master document. Chapter titles appear properly numbered in the master document.

I have images in the subdocument that have already been captioned as Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc. The author of this document would now like to number the images to Figure 1.1, Figure 1.2, Figure 1.3. I would like to know if it’s possible to achieve this renumbering without doing recaptioning each image throughout the document?

Additionally, although I seem to be able to achieve that kind of numbering in the subdocument, the new numbering doesn’t show up in the Table of Figures and the images continue to appear as Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3. (Essentially, the caption numbering in the subdocument is not reflected in the master document.)

I’m not quite sure where I’m going wrong. Ideas?

Thanks much.

Lisa

Now this is not a perfect answer here.

It describes the process required at the beginning of the writing.

I assume and hope that you use styles.
When using master document with sub-documents, make sure that the styles for e.g. headings, text paragraphs and figure captions are identical in both the master document and the sub-documents and, if possible, defined before writing.

From your description, I assume you configured accordingly the slave documents. You must also do it in the master documents. You can do it two ways.

I recommend you enable View>Formatting Marks and View>Field Shadings to ease the procedure.

###You have a figure outside the slave documents

The master document has a figure which was inserted directly in it, not through a slave document.

Right-click on the figure number (on the gray shading) and Edit field. Set Numbering by chapter to 1.

###All figures are in slave documents

Insert>Frame>Frame anywhere. Don’t bother with properties and appearance, you’ll delete it soon. Insert>Caption so that you have a Figure x: caption. You may have to select the correct category. Set Numbering by chapter to 1. Press OK.

Check all figure numbers are now prefixed with their chapter number.

Delete the inserted frame.

Something is going wrong for me and I’m not sure what. I understand how to insert a caption for a frame, but I cannot seem to get a caption that comes out as anything but Figure 1 (rather than Figure 1.1). Chapter numbering is enabled for the document. I have set Numbering by Caption to 1 and the preview of the caption does show Figure 1.1 Yet when I click OK, the caption is still Figure 1. I’ve tried deleting and reinserting the image and recaptioning it and I am unable to resolve this.
Ideas?

If you have no Heading 1 before the frame, the chapter number is undefined and returned as a null string. Insert a dummy Heading 1 before the caption and you should get the number. Delete it afterwards.

Still not working–using a dummy heading 1 above the frame still returns Figure 1 rather than Figure 1.1. ???

Attach a sample file to your question. Probably needs the master document and one sample slave.
