Apply style only to selection?

I would like to create a ‘commenting’ style,

This is some text #this is some comment in gray.

However, when I try to apply a style, it applies the style to the whole paragraph like this:

This is some text #this is some comment in gray.

Is there a way to apply style only to selection?

Never mind, figured it out

There are two types of styles one can create. A paragraph style and a character style.

The solution for me was to use a character style. (2nd icon in the style box, with litlte ‘a’ inside of it). Then it was easy enough to tie a hotkey to it.
