writer styles won't update

I’m copying and pasting text which in new doc I want to have a particular style. even selecting the whole block of text doesn’t change it from ‘default paragraph style’.
I’m using 7.0.5.2

Not sure to understand your problem.

Styles are intrinsic properties of text. This means the copy operation stores into the clipboard:

  • raw text (the characters)
  • paragraph style name for each paragraph
  • character style name where it is applied
  • direct formatting you’ve applied
  • (plus alternate formats in case you don’t paste into Writer)

I have highlighted word “name” to insist on the fact that only the style name is transferred, not its definition.

When you paste, clipboard content is added to your Writer document. What is displayed depends on the style definitions in the target document. When styles with the same name exist, formatting is done according to the target definition. This means the pasted block may look different from the source document.

But, if your original text contains direct formatting, direct formatting is kept and overrides the target style definitions.

You mention Default Paragraph Style which suggests you don’t use styles. In case you select from the paragraph style menu to change the style of the selected block, remember that direct formatting always has precedence over styles. Therefore, you need to Ctrl+M on selected text to clear direct formatting so that styles take effect.

Styles are not copied to a new document when you simply copy and paste some text. You should use the Stylist’s Load styles dialog.
