Subscripts Longer than 1 Character in Math

I’m putting equations into my LibreOffice Writer document. I know that the syntax for right subscripts in LibreOffice Math is a_{b}. But this doesn’t quite work when the subscript is more than one character; and the pattern of when it works/doesn’t work seems strange.

For example, suppose I want S_{left}
S_{l} displays just fine
S_{le} displays as S followed by an upside down question mark
S_{lef} displays ok again
S_{left} encounters the same display error as S_{le}

It doesn’t seem to be a matter of the number of characters being even/odd either. S_{r}, S_{ri}, S_{rig} and S_{righ} display fine. But S_{right} shows that upside down question mark.

What’s going wrong here?

left is a reserved word, other subscripts work OK.
You can do it like this: S_{“left”}.
Downside is, that it won’t be italic by default, you’ll need to change that in the Fonts settings.
