Custom Labels not showing Borders

Since updating, my saved custom labels do not show the borders only the text.C:\fakepath\Bottle Labels (Kantar).ott. I have attached a copy of my saved labels. They look like a blank page until you place the curser in one and type. Before you could see each individual label. There should be 16 individual labels to a page, 8 to a column.

Everything is styled Default Paragraph Style with added manual formatting. Vertical spacing is done with empty paragraphs. This is the worst way to work with Writer.

You made your "labels" with frames instead of a table. Frames are much more difficult to position than a table.

Which border(s) do you want to see or add? Hace you enabled View>Text Boundaries, Table Boundaries and Formatting Marks which are the basic on-screen clues to work "comfortably"?

@ajlittozFile > New > Labels creates a page with Frames and Default Paragraph style very similar to the sample. It seems harsh to criticise Oink for using labels of the same format as those supplied through Writer.

@Earnest Al: I was not aware of this because this is not my way of creating labels (due to fancy stationery). Then I put a strong blame on whoever implemented this unless a good rationale can be presented.

Ah well, I confess that I normally use a table for simple labels.

CAUTION! Vocabulary misunderstanding

In Writer, a border is a user-controlled graphical decoration around object like paragraphs, words, tables or frames. Since they explicit properties of text objects, update process will not change anything in documents. The only parameters which can be changed on update are those in the general configuration, usually stored in the user profile.

These are operating parameters about application general behaviour and display.

Among these are visual clues to help formatting documents. These are named boundaries.

All visual clues are controlled by the View menu. Important items are:

  • Formatting Marks: shows spaces, tabs, line breaks, paragraph breaks, non-breaking spaces, …
  • Text Boundaries: text area, header (when cursor is in header), footer area (when cursor in footer), …
  • Table Boundaries: table and cell limits (useful when table has no border)
  • Image & Charts: placeholder or image itself
  • Show Whitespace: when disabled, shrinks vertical space between paragraph and pages (not recommended for careful formatting because there is no feedback)
  • Field Shadings: add a gray background under fields, index entries, bookmarks, …
  • Field Names*: toggles between field name and value
