Outline Numbering

I’m trying to write a document and I want outline numbering for a Heading 3.

I just want something simple

1 Heading1
1.1 Heading2
1.1.1 Heading3

(formatting above improved by ajlittoz)

It looks like without a lot of manual reading and web searching though various posts, that are mutually contradictory, that this is not supported. But it must be!

I’m rather frustrated by this simple thing and so far I wasted over an hour on this.

Is there a definitive guide to doing this?

Sadly I have to get my document done today, and I don’t have time to research and experiment with something that should just work and I have switched to Word 2016.

Forgive my rather terse post, as I do want to do this simple thing today. The fact that I’m writing this and I have seen many other similar posts means that there is something fundamentally broken in LibreOffice.

Come on people. This shouldn’t be user hostile!

I retagged your question as writer-only because common means the problem occurs in all components: Calc, Draw, Impress, Base and Math, which is not the case.

The flaw in your question is the assertion “it is not supported”. And your mistake was to embark on Writer without reading any introductory material like the Writer Guide.

Never change your routine when you have a deadline. This is the best way to mess up everything.

It is very easy on the contrary.

First, your “outline” must be marked up so that Writer identifies it. This is done with the Heading n family of paragraph styles. You seem to be aware of this.

Second, numbering is controlled by Tools>Chapter Numbering. You enable numbering level per level (which gives you maximum flexibility). As a newbie, change only Number to 1, 2, 3 and Show sublevels to be the same as the level number (this is the default in principle).

You mention “many other similar posts means that there is something fundamentally broken in LibreOffice”. Give facts instead of rumour. I would be the first to drop Writer if there were something broken in it, considering the very sophisticated documents I produce.
