recalculate numbering

How do I recalculate numbering of all chapters etc at once instead of right-clicking on each one and selecting “continue previous numbering” from the dropdown menu?

The fact that chapter numbering is not automatically updated betrays a misuse from your part. Edit your question (don’t use “Add answer”) to give additional information:

  • OS name (not really relevant here)
  • LO version
  • how you number your chapters: paragraph style + numbering procedure

I guess that you applied some form of numbering with the toolbar button.

For more precise diagnostic, attach a short (3 pages max) sample file with the paperclip tool. Replace real content with “neutral” data like “lorem ipsum”. Make sure the problem is still present.

Did you, by any chance …

  • Insert a new section for each chapter?
  • Save your file to MS Word format (.doc or .docx)?

Either one may cause continuity to break, somewhat depending on LibreOffice version. A combination of the two is “dynamite”. Take that in conjunction with mixup of outline and paragraph numbering (which @ajlittoz seems to be guessing at), and you have the “perfect storm”.

MS Word and LO Writer have slightly different approaches to such things as sections, chapters, page formatting and structured numbering. If you go back and forth between the two, and/or read guides for both apps, it is easy to be confused. I get confused myself, sometimes. Major cleanup may be in order.
