Any luck, will we get LibreOffice Calc's "AutoSum" and "Filter by Color" features?

Now is the time to integrate the “Autosome” and “Color Filter” features into LibreOffice Calc. Adding these small features will greatly increase the use of LibreOffice. These two features are very important for small companies and those who work with data.
@LibreOffice2 Team, please take care of this issue with TOPMOST PRIORITY.

-1- Whats an “Autosome”?
-2- The “Color Filter” issue was discussed again and again… I still regard it a bad idea.
-3- This is a user site for Q&A. Who should feel addressed by your plea?
-4- There will soon be an alpha1 of version 7.2.0. It may contain a feature for filtering by color…
-5- What’s your question?

Adding these small features

… devs surely welcome you to implement.

IMO a main reason for what this isn’t an “easy hack”, is the fact that many users will expect to also be able to filter for conditionally (by CF) applied colors - and that this may require very infringing changes.

What would your AutoSum do that the existing AutoSum does not?

Dear Lupp,
Hope you are well. I’m very glad you put on your comment on my words. To answer your queries, here are-

-1- Pardon me for correcting You “AutoSum”. We expect a dedicated Toolbar ICON representing “AutoSum”, though the functionality is available in LibreOffice Calc in another way.

-2- With due respect, I slightly disagree with you. As you know, in some regular cases data or number color presentation is required in a spreadsheet. So working with the color-marked data or number “Color Filter” filtering feature is required.

-3- Addressing wasn’t my concern, presenting user needs was a concern. The World (LibreOffice Users) dream that LibreOffice will lead as a free and open-source, office productivity software suite. As a LibreOffice user, Q&A is the best place to present experiences and ideas. Expecting, someone here will always work to meet user expectations.

-4- Great news for millions of users. Looking forward to Alpha 1 of version 7.2.0.

-5- “Filter by color” - Honorable, you’ve already answered. Alpha 1 of version 7.2.0 is coming.
“AutoSum” - Millions of LibreOffice users looking for a dedicated Toolbar ICON that presents “AutoSum”.

Any feedback you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Dear erAck,
We expect a dedicated Toolbar ICON representing “AutoSum”, though the functionality is available in LibreOffice Calc in another way.

Please note: I did not announce the Filter by Color feature actually to come. I mentioned that LibO V 7.2 may contain an (attempted) implementation of the feature. The place actually appropriate for such feature requests and related discussions is https://bugs.documentfoundation.org. There you find the topic tdf#76258 where you can see that a developer assigned the “bug”(enhancement) to himself, and committed a patch with the proposed version 7.2. In the same place you find my comments #45 and #46 emphasizing my doubts concerning condaitionally applied colors (or any attributes).
With due respect: The “millions of users” you mention may not be aware of lots of expaectable complications. Fundamentally they may expect LibreOffice to be a clone of MS-something what it never was and what it surely shouldn’t be.
And once more:Setting colors as markers is the wrong and unnecessarily complicated way to do what you want. Use marks in a column evaluated by CF instead.

Usefulness of a suite doesn’t rely on an icon or button in a toolbar. Your “AutoSum” button is nothing more than application of function SUM() to some preselected area (but where goes the result?). I rarely trust such shortcuts. I prefer to write the formula myself and check it visually thoroughly.

You’re pleading for “millions of users”, but which ones? Those who design the spreadsheet or those who later use the spreadsheet to fill it in with numbers/data. I don’t mind some (but not too much) complication in the design phase provided the resulting spreadsheet can be used reliably by people not understanding the subtleties of formula design. The spreadsheet must be robust, simple and not causing confusion to its users. One more feature for the designer doesn’t make the difference here. You design once and you use many many times. So better care for usage with smart labels, clear guidance and low clutter.

We expect a dedicated Toolbar ICON representing “AutoSum”

See Tools / Customize / Toolbars and then command “Sum”. Dreams Come True!

After reading these multiple requests of an “ICON for AutoSum”, I fail to see how the existing Sigma icon on the formula bar (between fx button for function wizard and = button) doesn’t fit you?

Note that “millions of users” wanted in tdf#120697 that plain old dedicated “AutoSum” button become more feature-rich, with additional functions available - which happened in LO 6.3.

@mikekaganski: What’s your opinion about the current add-ons to the cv of tdf#76258 ?

@Lupp: this is an off-topic here, right? I’m glad to discuss this privately, if you email me (always glad to read mails from you!) - or if you create a dedicated topic here

Yoiu’re right, I’m just a bit upset…
But currently I’m also absorbed with different (non-LibO) things.
One day…

Luck is not involved. It requires quite a bit of skilled work. Priorities are to some degree governed by user interest, so you should vote for features you need.

To suggest new features or promote existing suggestions, go to the bugtracker. It is used for feature requests as well as bug reports.

In this place you can get help for existing functionality and features.

The most active related enhancement request should be tdf#76258 .

(I won’t comment on ‘ICONS’.)
Filtering for colors is just a feature, not part of a reasonable concept. What about “filtering for font size”, “… for font weight”, for whatever cell attribute?

Considering a generalized variant of the topic needs to distinguish two obvious branches:
-1- How should a task a user hopes for the “Filter by Colors” feature to do it, probably better be done?
-2- If filtering for ‘Cell Appearance’ at all should be supported, in what way should it best be implemented?
(Connected to both these branches: How can cell appearance follow a different solution?)

Both aspects and their relations were discussed in many threads here and in forums I have no “book of links” to.
However, I made another attempt to explicate the relevant aspects by an eample document.
See cfAndFilterByAttributes.ods

BTW: Anybody expecting LibreOffice to mimic the different parts of the MS Office suite (Which suite? They are different. And they are reported to be incompatible partly one with the other.) should consider what MS would do if a fully compatible free and open de-facto-clone of their software existed. After all they “make their living” based on incompatibility, and they can easily hire some dozen programmers to re-establish incomptaibility. Making feature-bags and cheering new funny features is simple. To create a consistent and long-term stable software suite may not be quite as simple. No problem, of course, if quality doesn’t matter.
