Why is TextBody centered?

In CentrLft.odtcentrLft.odt, Head9 has style Heading9, centered. Change it (^0) to TextBody, which is alignedLeft. Yet, Head9 remains centered. ClearDirectFormatting (^m) or double-clicking TextBody does not help. Why?

TextBody, which is alignedLeft

No.

You are right! TextBody is usually, and in my head, alignedLeft. But not in this template!
Sorry about the misplaced question.

You changed Default Paragraph Style alignment to Center.

Contrary to Word, this paragraph style should never be used for any text in a document. This style is the common ancestor of all others. Any modification to it is forwarded to the others. This is the intended behaviour. What you set in Default Paragraph Style is supposed to be shared all over the document, providing a handy way to define your own look-and-feel appearance. You then set only the differences in other styles.

What is the use of a style that ‘ should never be used’?? I use it very often, without any dire consequences…
Anyway, I was not trying to modify it, just to apply it.

This is a “technical” style, setting your preferred common defaults. Styles in Writer are the way to semantically markup your text. Semantic markup is metadata with which an author annotates his text to tell its importance: main discourse (Text Body), heading, note, comment, quotation, … Typographical attributes (font face, weight, size, colour, …) is only a consequence of this markup. They should not be your primary concern, contrary to text significance. They come in the end when semantic markup is translated into visual differences.

To facilitate author job, styles are hierarchically organised so that depending styles inherit from their ancestors and only attributes different from the ancestor need be specified, making a full consistent change in presentation a real treat.

Using Dft Par Stl without knowing that can lead to “surprises”.

Read the Writer Guide to get an idea of what can be done.

TextBody is usually alignedLeft —but not in this template!
Sorry about the misplaced question about a non-problem!

Because of the mentioned inheritance Default Paragraph Style=>Text Body.

If you fixed Text Body only, centering is kept for other styles inheriting directly from Dft Para Stl and you’ll meet the same issue in other contexts. Don’t forget to fix it.
