If I switch to Libre can I work with .doc and .xls docs on my hard drive?

I’m currently using MS Office and don’t want to keep paying them. I have a lot of docs and spreadsheets on my hard drive that I need to access? Can I do that? Also can I save docs and spreadsheets on my hard drive?

There is no harm in installing LibreOffice alongside MS Office.

Test using copies of your more complex documents. Make some changes, save, close and re open.

If you are planning to share documents with your colleagues, it is best if everyone uses the same software. Otherwise see if the documents open ok in MS Office for the occasional time you need to share.

There are fundamental differences between the suites so don’t expect exact appearance, and don’t keep changing between suites as that will concentrate the differences.

Hello,

yes - you can open existing documents in MS Office format. But you should create all new documents using ODF (LibreOffice’s native format), though you can even save files into MS Office formats.

Just my advice: Install LibreOffice (may be the portable release to an USB device) and test to open your most important documents. Then make your decision.
