Looking to insert 2 totally different photos side by side on the same page
- What do you mean by totally different?
- What is the real problem (assuming you don’t ask how to use
Insert -> Image...)?

Draw is the least problematic application. Just drag the pictures where you want them.
You can use a table with one row and two columns and then insert your images into cells

Thank you for all responses! The insert worked well for me in this instance.
Note: You can still add a “figure” caption for this table by selecting this category in the caption dialog (and also changing the caption position there, if necessary).
