I do get Recent documents empty, after upgrading to LO I found Several references to removing "registrymodifications.xcu" and ~/.config/libreoffice/3/user etc... BUT I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING. Is there a KIND and PATIENT soul who could explain step by step to a dummy like myself how to restore this blessed facility I use to get by pressing Alt+F then U ? Thank you

Presumably your are using Linux. All dot files (e.g., .config) are hidden by default. They can be revealed via Ctrl+H. The .config directory should then show up in your user directory /home/<user> or ~ as you indicate. The registrymodifications.xcu file should be at the bottom of the listing in .config/libreoffice/3/user for the version of LO you indicate.
