Language settings grammar checking

I go to tools - language - for all text - more and I see that although I see default as english everywhere, I see something like : Grammar Checking (Russian). And I do not see how to correct it. Yes I have other languages on my computer other than english but how did this happen and how can I turn the grammar checking to english?

Why do you need to correct this? What you show is just a settings page that allows one to configure grammar check settings specific to Russian, since there are such settings. Since you likely have installed spell checking for Russian (among others), and that component includes custom rules, you see the settings page.

We likely need to rename “English Sentence Checking” to more uniform “Grammar Checking (English)”, to have it consistent.

What do you mean why do I need to correct this? I want to make this English as I stated in my question. I am writing in English, why do I need a grammar check in Russian instead of English? I use libreoffice since yesterday and I never installed anything on it including russian spell checker or anything else. I have no idea why it says Russian there.

I want to make this English

For English, there is another settings page, as shown on your screenshot - named “English Sentence Checking”. The one that you marked is for the other sentence checker that you installed - namely Russian. If you have it installed, you have configurations for it - and here it is. And since it is for Russian checker, it can’t become “English”, even if you “want” it.

I never installed anything on it including russian spell checker

Your screenshot indicates that you use Windows, so I suppose you used MSI downloaded from LibreOffice page to install LibreOffice. I am sure that you have installed Russian spell checker when installed LibreOffice, even if you are not aware of that (you could use Standard install options, and the spell checker could be pre-selected based on some system settings).

You may check that using Windows’ Applications management app, and try to modify LibreOffice installation - there you may check the installed set.

I am not going to try to modify any installation whatsoever. Are you telling me that the sentence checker and grammar checker are the same thing? In other words, does the English sentence checker also check the grammar? If so then there is no problem. But still how it is written there is confusing.

As @mikekaganski says, this is a configuration page. As long as you don’t flag any text as being Russian, this has no effect.

Since you didn’t mention your OS, I assume it is Windows because there is no implicit grammar checker installation under other OS’s. You may eventually uninstall it but if you’re not tech savvy , leave everything as is because you could do more harm trying to customize your installation.

I use windows 10. Yes I will not touch anything. And the spell checker for English seems to work. And if the sentence checker for English also checks the grammar then all is ok

Have a look at English Sentence Checking pane, you’ll need to tick some settings. In my opinion, you will want to tick Possible mistakes, word duplication, Capitalisation, and Parentheses, read the help on the other settings to see if you want to enable them, some I find useful, others not so useful

Summary of the comments:

You’re in the Options part of the user interface. It lists all installed components, and allows you to configure each component, so it suits your purpose. Apparently, grammar checking for Russian came with your installation. On that tab, you can tell what rules the Russian grammar checker should use. Its presence doesn’t mean that your text is in the Russian language.
