What's the difference between "Calc A1" and "Excel A1"

I can choose between Calc A1, Excel A1 and Excel R1C1 syntax for formulas.

I understand what R1C1 does. It’s in Excel’s documentation. However I can’t find what separates Calc A1 from Excel A1.

What’s the difference?

I can’t answer but the choice has been around since at least 2009. And the closest I got to an explanation is in the section titled “Microsoft Excel Compatibility” here.

I can’t answer either and it is not explained in the current documentation. However I reported this to the LibreOffice Documentation team and hopefully it will be included in the documentation for version 3.6

Calc and Excel use different separators and different syntax for addressing files.

Just two short examples:

=Sheet1!D23 is the Excel syntax for addressing a cell in another sheet
=Sheet1.B14 is it in Calc

=‘Untitled1’#$Sheet1.$B$14 is the calc syntax to reference a cell in another file
=[Book1]Sheet2!$F$17 is it in Excel

Please also note that all special character from CalcA1, ExcelA1 and ExcelR1C1 are forbidden in names.
