Calc start-up times of larger files

Hi,

I’m trying to open moderately sized files (~5MB), and it takes around 4 minutes just to open them. I tried versions 4.1.5.3 and 4.2.3.3, no difference.

I’m running on Windows 7, 8 GB RAM, quad core intel i5 4GHz. Files and LibreOffice Calc both from SSD.

I’ve read few threads here and there mentioning similar problems with no solution. Is this issue being worked on, or anything I can do to speed up the process?

Hi @Dwelle, please what is the OS, the file format, saving in a network, links to extarnal files/places?

The slowness is due to the way Calc handles/distributes calculations by the cores/threads. There was a major rewrite of the Calc code so 4.1 and newer are faster than previous versions but still it is nowhere near Excel (or even Gnumeric)…

You can try increasing the memory available for LibreOffice: go to Tools > Options then under Libreoffice choose Memory and increase Graphics cache to 128Mb and the Memory per object to 20Mb
These are some values I got from here

In the same page and comments you can see other tips to accelerate LibreOffice in general, but maybe don’t make such a difference to the Calc problem…

Maybe someone else answering this post knows how to optimize this values (based on the user PC specs)or other tips to speed up calculations

I’ve gone through the site you posted and did everything, even trying disabling Java, but nothing really helped

@Dwelle, I didn’t expect it to make such a difference since the real problem is the core/thread data/calculation distribution… LO (and AOO) have inherited code from StarOffice which was created in the single CPU days… I think you need to wait for the next major rewrite
