In a master document setup, the master document is usually the template for all chapter documents. After I change any style in the main file, when opening a chapter file I am asked to update the styles from the main file.

I only want the master document to hold the chapter files together. The styles should be loaded from a separate template.

Is it possible to create a separate template and assign it to the master document so that all chapter documents ask for updating their styles whenever the separate template is changed?

EDIT: Seriously is it not possible to change the template of a master document?

I don't think so. This idea is so complex it might soon make my head ache :)

More head aches than the current master document implementation? :)

Please don't, nooo, it's hurting. Actually if you are determined enough you could write a script which would swap out the entire styles block from the file (or merge these or whatever you fancy). So the question is: Are you enough of a programmer?

In the styles dialog (F11), top right icon has menu with "Load styles". Use that to replace all the styles in file.

What happens when the style changes in the other document? Do I have to load them manually again?

Unfortunately yes. On the bright side maybe you are able to write a macro which would do it for you?
