The left and right margins can be made shorter to include more text. Can the same thing be done with the footer? I need a bit more space to include a sentence.

That has to be done in the page style. Several ways are possible:

  • Menu View > Ruler. Enable Vertical Ruler. Drag the line between gray and white section in the lower part of the ruler.
  • Work on the page style directly. Click on tab Page in the page style dialog. In part Margins reduce the value for "Bottom". There exists several ways to get the page style dialog:

    • Format > Page
    • Double click page style name in the status bar (likely "Default Style")
    • Right-click > Page
    • Open Sidebar, Style and Formatting pane, forth icon from left hold the page styles. Open it, right-click the style name, item Modify
  • Open Sidebar, Properties pane, section Page. The third icon from left holds the margin settings.
