I thought there was a way to keep the “Special Characters” dialog open for insterting more than one character at a time. This one:
I can’t spot it anywhere, though, and picking out characters, one at a time, re-opening the dialog, etc., is a real pain.
Have I just misremembered? Is there a way to keep this dialog open to choose a second, third, etc., character for insertion, then close the dialog manually? I hope so!
(I’m using LibO 4.3.3.2 under Ubuntu 14.04, FWIW.)
I was not certain that I understood the problem.
Have I misunderstood it? I opened the insert special characters using 4.3.3.2 under Ubuntu 12.04. I then inserted the following characters ¥ÆijœDžLjǽɶɺʫγУңՏႷᴤḔṵdžDŽҵӡ⁇⁈
⁋€ₘ with one INSERT SPECIAL CHARACTERS session pressing OK once.
Or did you mean I just want to insert one or more characters (¥Æ), press OK and then a little later insert one more characters (ijœDž) and then press OK again. The window in this case would need to remain open in between insert sessions. Peter
Yes, the first scenario. I feel a little sheepish - the trick is not to click OK - it’s that simple!
@dajare 's statement “inserting more than one character at a time” lets me assume that it is the first case in @petermau 's answer.
As for how to this, just press shift or ctrl while left-clicking the special characters. The list of selected characters are to be seen at the left bottom corner like:
and click OK at the end of your selection. Then the special character window closes.

If you can memorize the Codepoints for your special-characters use on ubuntu shortcuts like ctrl+shift+u2049 for ⁉
generally: ctrl+shift+u <hexadecimalCodepoint>

Ha! I have done that for some - U+20BE, U+20BF, and U+0259 are my “big three”. But the situations when I want to keep the dialog open is when I want several glyphs that are not part of my normal repertoire! I also make good use of the Compose Special Characters extension. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
