LibreOffice crashes at start

First I want to thank those who provide this free software and those who help out people like me in this community.

I used to use OpenOffice, worked great for months, then it would crash anytime I would open a document and start typing. It got very annoying so I gave LibreOffice a try.

I first installed the Still version (English, 4.3 for Windows 8.1) and it worked great. I was able to create and save documents and spreadsheets no problem. A few hours later though, it all went to hell. If I open LibreOffice and click Writer Document (or any other option), the program freezes and goes to Not Responding, forcing me to open Task Manager and close it. I tried just opening a file first and same thing (I can’t even see any of the document, it just goes gray and Not Responding).

I did an uninstall and tried LibreOffice Fresh, and the same problems occur. My computer is fairly new and I have no other problems with programs crashing/not responding, but OpenOffice/LibreOffice is giving me all sorts of problems.

Any ideas I can try? Is there a way to make sure everything is uninstalled aside from uninstalling it via Control Panel?

If I can’t open my files, is there a way to convert them or view them in a program outside any of these two options that is giving me problems?

HELP!!!

OpenOffice and LibO should run both on W8.1

I would try to run a virus checker to see if your computer is infected by something and remove this.

Next I would reset my user profile. For details please refer to: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

If no solution, I would next uninstall LibO completely. This means:

  • first check where you program is installed
  • second check where in W8.1 your application data are stored (Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Path
  • then uninstall LibO the way you have to do it in W8.1
  • delete all files and folder where your program was installed - if there are some left
  • delete all files and folder belonging to Application Data for LibO
  • search if, in the vicinity of the LibO program and application data folder, I find files and folder from OpenOffice and delete them.

Make sure your data are saved!

Hey thanks for the reply, I am going to give this a shot tomorrow when I have some time.

I did leave LibreOffice open for a while on the main screen without clicking anything, and came back to this Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library message:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\LibreOffice 4\program\soffice.bin

R6025

  • pure virtual function call

Not quite sure what to make of the error message, but could this by why the program crashes when I click anything?
