How do I make LibreOffice my default office suite on Mac?

Version 4.3.4.1
OS X 10.9.5

I’ve just got a new MacBook Pro and want to use LibreOffice as my default office suite, not the Apple suite. At the moment, documents automatically get opened in Pages, which I don’t want. I can’t open saved documents with LibreOffice either, but I can create and save new ones.

Thanks,

Sarah

@Sarah - As the answer is related to your Mac OS, I feel you better address this question in Mac forum. I use LibO on MacBookPro and moved the LibO icon in the dock (hope the name is correct) and just work from there. However my main machine is a windows PC.

OSX has the capability to define the default application used to open specific files or all files of a particular filetype. For a good explanation, see http://osxdaily.com/2013/08/08/change-default-application-open-files-mac-os-x/

What do you mean by “can’t open saved documents”? You haven’t described exactly what steps you took or what format the document files are saved in. In Finder preferences, make sure “Show all filename extensions” is ticked. What happens if you launch LO and then use File → Open? Are these .odt files, or a different filetype? By default, Apple Pages saves files in a proprietory (non-open) format: ‘.pages’. I’m not sure how well LO imports files of this sort. You may need to open them in Pages and export in a different format. See Opening Apple Pages '09 docs This is the issue with non-open file formats.
