Changing starting number value on a list without affecting other lists

I only recently switched from Word to LO writer and have run into something I cannot figure out.

In Word on numbered lists you can check either “start new list” or “continue from previous list” and then enter into the “set value to” field whatever you want the starting value to be and that change will not affect any preceding list in the document

I have not found a way to do the same thing in LO writer. No matter what I do, when I change the starting value on one list, it affects other lists, including preceding lists, in the document.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Any help will be much appreciated.

You can start each block of a numbered list with the number you want start with.

Click into the list > Format > Bullets & Numbering > tap Options > Start at (middle column) and set the the start number you want.

You can do this for each of the 10 numbering levels.

Thanks for your answer, but I have repeatedly tried that and it changes other lists besides the list I am in at the time. There appears to be no way to make a specific list independent of other lists that preceded it in the document.

After further experimentation, I found that if I avoid trying to use custom list styles and paragraph styles and just use the basic controls, it works. I still haven’t figured out how to make it work right with list styles and paragraph styles.

After some trial and error experimentation, I discovered that in order to use common list styles and paragraph styles with separate lists, one has to check the “restart with this paragraph” and enter the desired beginning identifier value in the “start at” field in the settings contained within the outline and numbering tab of the paragraph format menu, not the main bullets and numbering menu. The key is checking the “restart with this paragraph” check box.

I also discovered that when designing a custom multilevel outline style, you cannot directly enter letters identifying characters for the various levels in the “start at” field of the bullets and numbering options tab the way you do in Word. The “start at” field only specifies the identifying character order from the first one in the series. Thus if you want one of the outline levels to begin with the character “d”, you put the number 4 in the “start at” field with the identifier type “a, b, c …” selected in the “Number” field.

This may all be clearly explained somewhere in the documents, but I did not see it.

New account, can’t upvote, but this appears to be the solution. In case anyone has difficulty finding the “restart with this paragraph”, it is in the “Outline & Numbering” tab of the Paragraph settings (right click, Paragraph…). Thanks tenntexj!
