a lot of signs come out broken in formula, what should I do?

Make sure, that the font “OpenSymbol” is installed. The font file is opens___.ttf and the current version is 102.6. You can get it from http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/tree/extras/source/truetype/symbol. There had been some problems with fonts, see e.g. fdo#76239 and its duplicates.
