I am using version 4.3.5.2 on Windows 7 OS. I am able to use vlookup function within the same worksheet / work book / file. How do I use between 2 different files. I am not able to select the array as it is not getting highlighted.

Please suggest.

Instead of actually referencing different file (though this is also possible via DDE link, I don't recommend), insert some sheets from file you're referencing, Link'ing them (it's checkbox in sheet insert dialogue).

When opening this spreadsheet, LO will ask to refresh or not imported sheet(s). You're able to edit references (or break link, keeping contents) via Edit → Links.

This is very similar to what Excel does when referencing another spreadsheet in formulae (Excel actually saves referenced ranges to spreadsheet, but doesn't show them anywhere).

Did you try to reference into a newly created, not yet saved file? This is impossible because an external reference must contain a document (file) location.

If this was your situation the remedy is saving any source file first. If not, please give us more details.
