Image quality higher in exported PDFs than .odp. How to get best quality images in odp presentations?

When I last gave a presentation using Impress I noticed that imported images were very grainy. I have since tried eps images, as well as high resolution png and neither offer an improvement. Any text embedded within my images looks poor compared to text written in LO.

The images look grainy both on a projector using a VGA connection, and also my external monitor via HDMI.

However, if I export the presentation as a PDF and open up the slides in evince, the images are much clearer and better rendered.

I prefer using Impress for presentations if possible, so is there a way to improve the quality of images in odp presentations?

Other info:
OS: Linux Mint 17.1

It depends on the source format.

If the images are in a vector format, then saving them as SVG or ODG (Draw) and importing them should work well. Draw can import a number of other vector formats. If yours is not supported, consider getting Inkscape (the Mint package manager should have it), opening your image and saving it as SVG.

This will not work, however, if your images are in a raster format such as PNG, GIF or JPG: While vector formats can be scaled to any size and still look crisp, raster formats store the image in pixels, and scaling them will reduce the quality of the image. This effect somewhat depends on the rendering engine, which may explain why the PDFs look better in evince than the presentation in Impress.

Converting to SVG is a good advice. Had the same problem and followed your path. Ideal? No, but already much better than simply copy/paste…
