What character separates fields when inserting sheet from file?

In OpenOffice, I created a file where each line had fields separated by ~ (tilde). When inserting sheet from such a file, each line became a row in the spreadsheet and each tilde separated field on that line became a column in that row.

Using that technique in LibreOffice does not work. What character should be used to separate fields for LibreOffice?

I found the answer in the Calc PDF file under Opening CSV files on p. 21.
In LibreOffice one opens the CSV file. In OpenOffice one inserts a sheet from a file.
