I have a cell which I would like to contain a numeric value. The value I want is 4% divided by 12.
I have entered this formula as “= 0.04 / 12” which Calc interprets to be a date?
Is there any way to get the numeric value I want without using multiple cells?
I’m enter =4%/12 and it returns what I expect → 0.0033333333

It is a question of formatting.
I entered “0.04/12” (no quotes) (notice also no ‘=’) in a cell of a brand-new spreadsheet & got the same (‘04/12/2015’) (if I enter “=0.04/12” (no quotes) I get ‘0.003333…’).
Next, I formatted as ‘%’:-
(menu):Format|Number Format|Percent (Ctrl+Shift+5)
…now I enter “=4/12” (no quotes) & it shows ‘33.33%’.

This may depend on the dates recognition parameters according to the “locale” : Tools Options Language Settings Languages Date acceptance patterns.

With en-US locale i get text if I enter “0.04/12” (no quotes) which I would expect. This is not like @AlexKemp.
With = it calculates the formula.
If I format the cell as Date and enter “=0.04/12” (no quotes) I get “12/30/99” not “4/12/2015” which is also expected.
From my point I have no idea what happened and can not replicate any thing.
I’m using LO 4.4.4 on Win7, you did not mention your LO version.
