why does writer lose formatting when i save *.docx

am using ubuntu 14.04 and latest updates on LibreOffice - why does writer lose formatting when i save *.docx

The document models of MS Word ™ and LibreOffice are different. We shouldn’t expect that every kind of structuring/formatting documents can be mapped from the representation for its native application onto the representation designed for an alien application (in hindsight). If you want to get suggestions about how to achieve specific results in a way not too deeply depending on the application, you should give much more detail.

file is created in folder as untitled file.docx …

How did you do that? If I create a new object in a folder I get some options concerning the kind of object, but none of these is ‘New MS Word OOXML document’. If I create a new text document and subsequently change its extension to .docx I will get a wrongly named plain text file. This file opened with LibreOffice Writer may get filled in formatted text which may be reformatted in any way… If I order the document to be saved I am warned:

This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the currently selected file format “Text”.

And if I confirm saving in the present file format I will get a plain text file containing no formats at all, simply because it cannot keep formats - but wrongly pretending to be ‘.docx’.

If I don’t agrree but choose ‘Save As…’ one or another way I can select the ‘Office Open XML’ file format and all the formats Writer can export this way are preserved.

… then text is copied in, all is selected and formatting removed then formated and saved. file is closed. when file is reopened all formating is gone.

might give a hint that you possibly saved as plain text.

LO is not a clone of MS Office. There are some LO things that will not transfer to MS-Office. The following may help:-

Feature Comparison between LO-5 & MS-Office-2013
(the link shows only differences)

If you save in the MS-Office format, then you need to explicitly specify that format of file:-

  1. First, examine the default format:-

(menu):Tools|Options|Load/Save|General (what is the ‘save as’ default?)
  2. (if default is ODF)
Use ‘Save As’ when the file is saved

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:).
