Base and MS-Access 2007-2013

I just started using Linux Mint 17.2. I’ve transferred my files from Windows 8.1 and is having problems opening my databased in Base. Is there a way to access my databases in LibreBase?

the files extensions are .mdb and .accdb. I noticed that in Linux, the .accdb file type shows as Binary and the .mdb files shows as document.

Please, suggestion, anyone??

You cannot open MS Access databases in Base. You can however link to the Tables in an Access Database.

Create a new Base Database and in the Wizard select “Connect to an existing database”. Select in the drop-down Access for .mdb files and Access 2007 for .accdb files.

Please help here. Using v4.4.7.2 I find no such selection under ‘Connect to an existing database’. Have items for MySQl, Text, PostgreSQL and more but nothing for Access.

Using Windows LO ver 4 and 5 have Access options. May be as you are using Linux they are not available options.

Another method is to export the data from MS Access into Excel/DBF format (refer this question). Related wiki page for connecting to MDB/ACCDB files here.

File extensions .mdb (older version) and .accdb (newer version) are used in MS Access. Files with these extensions are not directly translatable to LO Base.

Thank You peterwt & oweng for your direction. This led me to investigate further. Not using Windows any more ( 20+ yrs - couldn’t take it) using Excel was out and the wiki referred to connection in Windows.

I did discover Apache Drill but after about 45 minutes I was still confused. What I also found was ucanaccess . Had a bit of trouble at first until using this step-by-step at askubuntu . Found an old .mdb file, walked through the steps and all the tables were there.

As expected, it was only the table data and no forms or code.

When you link to Access database in Base you can only see the Tables. The Forms etc. are in a format only accessible with MS Access.

You need also a Microsoft Acces runtime environment. If you don’t want: the simple and efficient “MDB-plus” application can easy *.accdb transform to *.csv or others.
