Embedding video: the format of the selected file is not supported

I’m trying to embed a video file in a presentation in Impress but this keeps showing up. I’ve tried many formats, even the one’s said that could be supported by Impress. I’m using Windows 10 Home edition, also do we need to have DirectShow installed? If so, anybody got links because I can’t find any, any advice or help would be gladly appreciated!

Alex, could you please specify also for FreeBSD which packages (or ports) must be installed to get this working. Thanks in advance

I managed to get a video embedded by reformatting it using VLC to a YouTube format which used an H-264 video codec at 1500kb/s and MP3 at 128kb/s . The problem I could not solve with that Windows edition was slides with sound files on their own which exhibited a delay of 8 seconds before playing…

I solved this by using Linux Mint 17.2 and LO 5. See :

For windows, you need to install a codec bundle like K-Lite Codec Pack or Combined Community Codec Pack.

For linux, you need to install the various GStreamer codec packages and GStreamer’s ffmpeg/libav plugin package.
