Why are the sort buttons greyed out so you cannot use them

I cannot sort in any mode form or table

Sort buttons on a table are greyed out when the table is empty. Sort sequence in a form is set in the properties dialog of a form in the data tab under Sort. On a form, you can also set a sort sequence using the Form Navigation toolbar.
