cannot insert scanned image in Calc, but can in Write or Draw

There is no option that I can see that will allow me to scan an image into a spreadsheet using Calc. Am I missing something? The instructions for inserting an image from the scanner say to:

Choose Insert - Picture - Scan

That works for the writer program, but not for the Calc program… it doesn’t have an option to insert a “Picture” but does have an “Image” sub-menu in the Insert pull-down menu… but that has no “scan” option. The Draw program, on the other hand, also has “Image” instead of “Picture”, but it does have a scan option in that sub-menu!

  1. Should I look somewhere else for the scan facility in Calc?
  2. Shouldn’t all programs use the same naming, such as “Picture” instead of “Image”, and match the on-line manual, and is the lack of a scan option in Calc a mistake?
  3. The scan user interface isn’t particularly great in LibreOffice… it is more convenient than having to keep going to some external program and create a temporary file, but could there be a “repeat last scan” button to insert another image quickly using the previous settings, for example?

I am using a Linux kubuntu/ubuntu version of LibreOffice, if that makes any difference:
Version: 4.2.8.2
Build ID: 420m0(Build:2)

Hi Maitchy

Yes, your version and/or source does make a difference.

Debian 7.9

LO-4.4.4.3 (not loaded via repository, but direct via LO):

The following is available via the identical menu method in Calc, Draw, Impress, Writer (not Math, cannot test Base):

  • (menu):InsertMediaScan→(either Select Source... or Request...)

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:)

…and/or show you like it with an uptick ()

With my LibO 5.0.3 on Win 8.1 I experienced that the above described way is working in ‘Writer’ and in ‘Draw’ while the items under ‘Scan’ are disabled in ‘Calc’.
