Trying to export my end notes of an ODT document into a PDF document the links between the anchor in the text and the end note (and wise versa) are lost. Normal links and cross-references within the document are exported. I used the command File > export as PDF (in the German version of LibreOffice 4.4.5.2).

To make useable links to and from end notes in a PDF file created by LibreOffice, you must create hyperlinks from the links in the body’s text, then create new links in the end notes to take you back to the places in the text that pointed to the end notes.
The links in the body’s text may be superscript numbers. In the ODT document, to link these superscript numbers to their corresponding end notes in the PDF document:
- Highlight each superscript number. To find each number, scroll down to each end note and click on the number of the end note, which will take you to the place in the text where the superscript number is located. To highlight it is tricky. Click to position the cursor behind the number then hold the SHIFT key down and click immediately in front of the number.
- Select “Insert” then “Hyperlink” from the top menu bar, or simply press Ctrl-K.
- Click on “Document” icon in the left column of the dialogue box.
- Enter the “Target name.” This is the name of the hyperlink in the corresponding end note. At this time you will not yet have named the target, but you will shortly. You will need to keep the target names simple (e.g., name the first end note something like “E1”).
- Enter the “Name” of this hyperlink. Keep it simple and keep track of the name (e.g., if this number is a link from the text to the first end note, name it “T1” or something like that).
- Leave all other fields blank. Exit by clicking on “Apply” and “OK.”
- Repeat this process for all the other superscript numbers pointing to end notes.
- If you want, change the attributes of the hyperlink fonts, since LibreOffice automatically reformats all these hyperlinks according to the “Internet Link” style (listed under “Character Styles” in the “Styles and Formatting” side bar). Note: If you change the style of the character, all hyperlink characters in the entire document will be changed at once.
Now you will need to create a link at the top of each end note.
- Write some kind of text at the beginning of each end note, possibly in square brackets like this: “[Click here to return to previous place in the document.].” Because you cannot make a hyperlink from the auto-generated numbers belonging to the end notes, you need to create your own link back to the place in the body’s text, where the superscript number is found. And this link back to the body text must be clear and obvious to the reader.
- Highlight this newly created text at the top of your end note.
- Select “Insert” then “Hyperlink” from the top menu bar or simply press Ctrl-K.
- Click on “Document” in the left column of the dialogue box.
- Enter the “Target Name” of the link this end note is associated with, such as “T1.”
- Enter the “Name” of this link, such as “E1.”
- Leave all other fields blank. Exit by clicking on “Apply” and “OK.”
- Repeat this process for the rest of the end notes.
Now, when you export to a PDF document, the reader will be able to click on the link to the end note, read it, then return to the body text by clicking on the link you created at the top of each end note. This is a temporary fix and a tedious process but it works for me (LibreOffice 6.0.3.2 in Ubuntu 18.04).
