I somehow enabled overtype and can’t disable it. Sought help online but but all people say is to hit the “insert” button on my keyboard. Problem is I’ve got a Mac, whose keyboards don’t have "insert’ key.

At the bottom of your screen is the Status Line (Page #, Style, Language etc.). There is one field where you can switch with the mouse between insert/overwite mode. By default (insert) it is blank, if you are in overwite it should have some text in it. Just click on it to go back to insert.
Writer: 5. field from left; Calc: 4. field from left.
The help page is only half correct. They changed the wording and the behavior in LO3.x but never updated the help entry.
