I’m not a regular user of spreadsheets. I’m taking .xls sheet and changing it with calc. When I set a cell’s format to Date(1999-12-31) and enter “2016-03-01”, I get “###”. This is in a row with bold text in some of the cells. Any suggestions?

Make the cell(s) wider until the date string appears.
The column is too narrow to display the date. Right click on the column heading and select ‘Column width…’ to change or you can hover the mouse on the right vertical line of the column heading (will change to double arrows), hold down the left mouse button & drag the line to the width wanted.
Or use Alt+Right on such a cell until the column is wide enough.
