Is there anyway to quickly find a specific word or text within a document (such as with Word you could use F5 and enter what you were looking for)?

If you press F5 in writer you get a similar window as in Word to find Sections, Tables or OLE Objects but no single words.

To find single words or text you would press Ctrl+F (Find).

Word gives you with F5 the option to to select Find, Replace or GoTo. Writer does not, so you have to use the Find command directly.

when pressing ctrl+F the cursor jumps directly into the find-window at bottom left corner of your LO window. This window is actually always open and you just can place the cursor into it an type your search term.

when pressing ctrl+H you find the find&replace window in the middle of the text (like in WORD)
