How can I change the page formating in the middle of a document without it affecting the beginning?

I have a document where I need the first 4 pages to be normal but the rest of the document must be in 2 column format. If I make a page format change on page 5, it changes the formating for the whole thing.

the issue is that format page is actually format pages (plural) & in reality format section, a simple text change would have avoided this issue which i encountered years ago.

Insert a section break between the normal format and the two-column format.

By using sections I was able to format the entire document successfully in a couple of hours; ending many weeks of frustration. I tried to work with styles and could not make them work for me.

Use Page Styles… as in use different Page Styles.

Apply any given page style to the first 4 pages (even default).

Create a new page style in the Style Window (open with F11, go to page styles tab, right click > new)
Give it a name and set your formatting there.

At the end of page 4 insert a Manual Page Break and in the dialog tell that you want the new page style from there on.

If later you want to go back to default page style, simply insert another page break and set back the default page style.

@PaoloPelloni, when you insert a section break, you get to specify various settings (including how many columns) for the section. This becomes operative for the remainder of the document or until you add a subsequent section break with different settings.

Indeed but with page style you have better/more control. You can add multiple sections faster and change all the formatting from a single point. So personally I would use page styles.
