I cannot find the box to make text BOLD or italics and to change font size
You need to show the toolbar.
Click
View/Toolbars/Text Formatting

Long answer
Highlight the text you need to make bold.
Press and hold down the Control key marked Ctrl.
Press the B key,
the text will become bold is not bold, and not bold if bold, ie it is a toggle.
If half (or even a percentage of) of the text is bold before you start, it will make all of the text bold on the first press of B
You can also use Ctrl U for underline and Ctrl I for italics
Also right clicking any highlighted text will give you the formatting menu, select as required, bold is under the entry Style.

Opp did not read the question fully.
Did not realise the you wanted the buttons, check any toolbar by right clicking any toolbar
then select customize toolbars. Then you want the Text Formatting Toolbar.
Look through that toolbar and make sure that the options, ie bold, are selected.
