When I insert an image such as a photograph, it appears as a black box in the same ratio as the picture.
Check View - Images and Charts in the menu. When disabled, it displays a grey box with “Image1” (or another number) in red. If it’s different for you, please give more details. It might be that the image got damaged, for instance.
