Continue list numbers across heading

Hello,

I’m trying to keep my numbering consistent throughout a document. When I put in a Heading, I no longer get the option to “Continue previous numbering.”

Here’s what I want:

Heading 1

  1. Example 1
  2. Example 2

Heading 1

  1. Example 3

Heading 1

  1. Example 4

Here’s what I get:

Heading 1

  1. Example 1
  2. Example 2

Heading 1

  1. Example 3

Heading 1

  1. Example 4

I managed to fix it via workaround by removing Headings, because then the option to Continue Previous Numbering reappeared. Then I put the Headings back in and numbering stayed intact.

Is there a way to change the Heading or Numbering format in order to allow continuous lists across Headings?

Thank you.

Hi

Sorry but I do net see differences between what you want and what you get (probably a typing error).

I understand that you want a continuous numbering of titles level 2. If this is the case, the solution is:

  • Set ToolsOutline NumberingNumbering tab▸Level 2Number to None
  • Update Heading 2 (paragraph style)▸Outline & Numbering tab:
    • Outline level: Level 2 (include this style in TOC)
    • Numbering style: Numbering 1

See ContinuousNumbering.odt

If this is not what you want, please give more details.

Regards

I can’t reproduce your problem (and also you probably made a mistake when describing it because both cases are identical above). If I understand correctly, you want:

1. Heading 1
    1-Example 1
    2-Example 2
2. Heading 1
    3-Example 3
3. Heading 1
    4-Example 4

If your ‘example’ paragraphs are styled Numbering 1 and not Heading x, this is exactly what you get. Remember that Numbering 1 must be modified so that paragraphs are effectively numbered. You do this with a right-click on the style name in the style panel, then Modify.... Go to the Outline & Numbering tab and set the Numbering style: to Numbering 1 with the drop-down menu.

Restarting the example list number to 1 requires an explicit action:
right-click on the paragraph where you want to reset numbering and choose Restart numbering.
