Create a Table of Contents from a format instead of style

Hello,
I 'know how to create a ‘Table of Contents’ from a style. However, I have several headings that are formatted with a particular font and color in a large document but not associated with a style. Anyway to create a TOC out of that? I can create a style by selecting one of the headings and then apply it on every heading but that would be very time consuming

If you have applied the same formatting for your headings consistently, then why didn’t you do that using styles? They’re made for the purpose. The best advice I can give here is to learn to work with styles. Then everything will be much easier. If you did use the same font size and color, you can use Search/Replace to select all such instances at once, like this:

First open the list of styles (F11). Type .* in the Search box, click Other options, tick Regular expressions, click Format, on the Font tab you can enter the font size, on the Font effects you can select the color you use. Click OK, click Find all (please execute these instructions as you read them, then they make more sense), close the dialog box. Double click the heading style that you need to apply, like Heading 1 for a chapter title. Don’t use Heading - that’s not meant to be used at all. Right click the paragraph style, select Modify and change it according to your wishes. Do the same for all other level headings. Then make your TOC.

You can also make TOC manually, using cross references.
