Why can't I save docs as PDFs and all my PDFs turn into Wordpad?

Hi, in last 2 days, I can’t save /export my documents as PDF. They have turned in to gibberish in Wordpad! Even the existing PDFs now opens the same in Wordpad! My laptop came back from repair recently, not sure if this has anything to do with it ? but all else functions fine. I’ve tried reinstalling the Libreoffice Still 5.1.6 but its still the same. I really appreciate anybody’s help!

There is a difference between the format files are saved in and the application used to open them. There may be nothing wrong with your PDFs (a file format), just the application (e.g. Wordpad) that you are attempting to open them with. Wordpad is a simplified word processor and is not meant for PDFs.

If you export to PDF from within LibreOffice, does it save a PDF file?

Do you have a PDF reader, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit reader or PDF Xchange viewer, installed? Did your service person perhaps uninstall it?

Try specifically opening your PDF files in a PDF reader by either opening Acrobat Reader first and then from within that application opening your file or, in windows explorer, right-clicking the PDF file and choosing open with… and choosing your PDF reader from the list of applications. Do the files open OK?

If these things check out OK, then it is probably an issue with telling Windows what application to use by default to open PDF files. As you haven’t told us what version of Windows you are running, see here for multiple instructions: How to Change File Associations in Windows

Thank you so much Mike! It was so simple, yes the repair guys must have uninstalled my Adobe Acrobat Reader! And I was in so much distress…you don’t know how hopeless I am with the IT! Even your detailed infor was beyond me, glad it was something simple.
