How do I get rid of code in a document?

I have a short story which is suddenly full of crap which was not part of the original text. I assume it is some sort of coding, but I don’t know how it got there and I don’t know how to get rid of it.

Look if you have activated Nonprinting Characters Nonprinting Characters - LibreOffice Help

Look if you have Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > View > Display > Field codes enabled.
