How Do I Modify Mail Merge Templates For Writer That Use A Calc Database

My first time using this forum, so please bear with me.

I am using the latest version of LibreOffice Portable.

Some years ago I built a MailMerge facility in which I created a letter template with embedded fields to include our address, recipient address, date and salutations. The link to an address database was via a Calc spreadsheet and an .odb database file ie the process of linking an address database contained in a Calc .doc file to the Writer template required the creation and registering of an .odb database file.

Now, I understand that this tripartite process of a) Template b) Calc .doc file c) .ODB database file can be reduced to two components ie. Template and Calc .doc file.

The problem is I cannot find any detailed information on this new process Can you help?

What I am looking for in GENERAL is a talk through how to create a Template and link it to the database component ie Calc .doc

But more SPECIFIC, I want to know how to modify my existing template and database to exclude the use of an .odb file. The reason for this is, that I found it most difficult to put together the template including automatic none printing of blank lines and if at all possible I would like to avoid the recreation of a new template.

Can anybody give me specific help or point me to user friendly documentation?
