Missing formula symbol(s) - only Liberation font showing as option

I’ve been trying to add the oplus symbol to my formulas and I’m only getting the red question mark indicating the symbol is missing from the font. Normally the fix I’d try is to swap to a different font, but in the Formula editor only one Liberation font is available to select for each font choice. In contrast, for regular text in Writer and Impress all the installed fonts are available.

I’ve tried the Formula editor in both Writer and Impress and in LibreOffice 5.2 & 5.3 and I’ve had no success in fixing the problem. I’d like help either fixing the Liberation Serif font so that it doesn’t have missing formula symbols and/or help in getting the formula editor to recognize more fonts.

Format → Fonts → Modify, and use the dropdown list to modify the font for a particular item.

As for the “missing symbol” issue, it turns out LibreOffice doesn’t treat oplus as a symbol, but as an operator. The inverted red question mark is due to the fact that as an operator, it needs something on both sides for there to not be an “error.” Unfortunately, this means I cannot use it for the purpose that I want to, which is as a subscript symbol.

I’ve turned to the TexMaths plugin as a workaround.

Then simply insert it as a plain character. It is a bit tricky, as Math has no such functionality, thus, use Writer, go to Insert → Special Character… dialog and copy it via the clipboard.
