I am trying to copy images, such as jpgs, and paste them in a text document. What I get is a border with a "three box symbol in upper left corner - blue, red, yellow," and the words Image 16 (or what ever number.)

What type of image? What's it's name, extension, .. and where did it come from, and what OS are you on? And where did you cut it from?

The most convenient product I use for putting images in documents is called Lightshot. However, it seems to me that you really need some basic tuition before you try even this. Try clicking on the Help button and searching for what you need to know.

I second EasyTrieve's question: what OS are you using?

For mac OSX, the method I use (not sure if it's the best- if not could someone please advise me on a better way?) is to save the image as a .PNG file (if unsure how to do this then save as a PDF then go File > Export).

Then, using Preview, use one of the selecting tools available to select the image (see attached screen shot):

C:\fakepath\Screen shot instant alpha.png

Once you have selected the image, cut the image (command x) then paste it into your writer document (click anywhere in the writer document and press command v).

The image should now appear in the document. To change its size, click and drag any one of the 8 green "handles" around its border.

You may find this article useful for information on adding images to Writer; possibly the most useful suggestion is don't copy/paste images :-)

Also, make sure you check under Tools | Options | Writer | View and ensure that Display graphics and objects is checked.

Not quite. The point is don't copy/paste photos or JPG files. Copy/paste other images is fine.
