I just downloaded LibreOffice, because I cannot stand the thought of getting fleeced one more time by Microsoft.
But then the spell check did not work. The solution to this was very simple, but I am not a psychic.
Apparently under Tools the Default Language was not selected (or something like that). Anyway it works now.
The sad news is, it took me a hour to figure this out… only simple after you know it.
The software should have used the default English US spell check.
My point is: It is these little details which makes some “free” SW suddenly not free anymore. I will donate to the foundation anyway… but please ATTENTION TO DETAIL… it does not matter if the user is just ignorant like myself. If it does not work out of the box, it is not good.
