I have some old document files that were probably originated from Microsoft Word. I am now using Libre. I cannot get the doc files to open. Please help.

A file usually has some bytes at the start of the file, which tell the format of the file. If we know the exact format, we can look, whether LibreOffice has an import filter for it. And getting the file, I can try whether an older version of LibreOffice is able to open it, or any other application is able to open it. Worst case would be, if the files are corrupted.
Upload a sample file to a file sharing host such as Dropbox and edit your question to include the URL to the file.
It might be because the documents may not be compatible for LibreOffice
Do they open when you go File > Open and navigate to the document? If so, you have lost thje file association between .doc and LO - google file association.
