Citations in the text [1]. That is all I am trying to do .. hours spent now ..

Every reference I find says to begin by clicking on tools->Bibliography Database[2]. But that does nothing. I click, and it is just like I haven't clicked. People say, "join zotero" so I did, no change.

I would prefer the document to be stand alone. I'm not wanting to experience opening a doc to work on it, and connectivity issues to a database causing the doc to be broken.

no one on the IRC channel has any idea ... why is this so hard???

[1] Version: 5.3.1.2; Build ID: 1:5.3.1-0ubuntu2; CPU Threads: 4; OS Version: Linux 4.10; UI Render: default; VCL: gtk3; Layout Engine: new; Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); Calc: group

[2] Libre Office Writers Guide 4.2, section "Creating a bibliographic database" p370: "Select Tools > Bibliography Database. The Bibliography Database window similar to that in Figure 367 opens." -- and no it doesn't -- nothing happens!

The bibliographic database works with Java, so check if you have a Java runtime installed and that that runtime is selected on Tools → Options → LibreOffice → Advanced.
