It hasn't been updated for a while, and I have not tested it extensively, but it seems to work (LO 5.3.3, Kubuntu 16.04).

IO think the best way is to see general stats for document (Tools > Words counter) within some time span (like 12hrs or sth) and compare it with previous values.
